Trauma
Your Past Doesn't Have to Define Your Present
Trauma isn't just what happened to you. It's what happened inside you as a result — the ways your nervous system learned to stay safe, the beliefs it formed about yourself and the world, the ways it still shows up today. Healing doesn't mean forgetting. It means the past stops running your present.
Signs trauma may be affecting you
Persistent low mood or feeling empty inside
Feeling numb, detached, or "not quite here"
Startling easily or feeling on edge constantly
Hypervigilance: always scanning for danger
Difficulty trusting others or feeling safe in relationships
Avoiding people, places, or things that trigger memories
Shame, self-blame, or feeling "broken"
Physical symptoms: chronic pain, fatigue, tension
These are normal responses to abnormal experiences. They made sense then. With support, they can shift.
Understanding Trauma
Trauma Is What Happens When Your System Is Overwhelmed.
Trauma isn't defined by the size of the event, it's defined by the impact. Something that others might brush off can be profoundly wounding. Childhood experiences, relationship abuse, accidents, medical trauma, loss, sexual assault, witnessing violence, or even growing up in a household with chronic instability, all of these can leave lasting marks.
"Trauma is not what happened to you. Trauma is what happened inside you as a result of what happened to you." — Dr. Gabor Maté
Complex trauma (cPTSD) develops from repeated or prolonged experiences such as childhood abuse, neglect, or living with a parent with addiction. It often shows up differently than single-event PTSD, and it's just as real and just as worthy of care.
At Evluni, we understand that trauma lives in the body and the nervous system, not just the mind. We take a holistic approach to healing that honours your whole experience.
"It wasn't that bad"
Minimizing your own experience is one of the most common responses to trauma. If it affected you, it matters. Full stop.
Your reactions make sense
Hypervigilance, shutting down, people-pleasing , these were brilliant adaptations. They kept you safe. They just don't serve you the same way now.
Time doesn't always heal
Trauma doesn't just fade with time. Without support, it can become more embedded. But it absolutely can heal at any stage of life.
You won't be forced to relive it
Good trauma therapy doesn't require re-traumatizing you. We work at your pace, prioritizing safety above all else.
How we help:
Gentle, Effective Trauma Healing
Trauma therapy isn't about diving into the worst moments. It's about building safety, understanding, and slowly loosening the grip the past has on your present..
Safety First, Always
Before anything else, we establish a sense of internal and relational safety. Healing cannot happen when you don't feel safe, and we never rush this.
Somatic &
Body-Based
Work
Trauma lives in the body. We incorporate body awareness, grounding, and nervous system regulation so you can feel safe in your own skin again.
Narrative & Identity Work
Trauma often hijacks our sense of self. We help you reclaim your story so you are more than what happened to you.
Complex & Childhood Trauma
We specialize in relational and developmental trauma, including the layered effects of difficult childhoods on your adult life, relationships, and self-concept.
Trauma-Focused CBT
We address the beliefs trauma created "I'm not safe," "It was my fault," "I'm broken" and replace them with truths your nervous system can actually believe.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization)
A powerful, evidence-based therapy that helps the brain process traumatic memories so they lose their emotional charge and become just… memories.

Trauma healing has its own timeline. We never push you faster than feels safe. Some sessions may involve processing; others may focus on just stabilizing. Both are valid.
What Trauma Healing Looks Like:
-
We build a therapeutic relationship where you genuinely feel safe. This foundation is everything.
-
We build coping tools and grounding skills before we do any deeper work, so you always have support.
-
We make sense of your responses and symptoms through the lens of trauma, removing shame and building insight.
-
At your pace, we address difficult memories and experiences, reducing their power over your present.
-
You develop a new relationship with your past, your body, and yourself, one where trauma no longer runs the show.
-
No. Effective trauma therapy does not require you to narrate every detail. Many approaches including EMDR can create significant healing without detailed re-telling. We always follow your lead.
-
PTSD typically follows a single overwhelming event. Complex PTSD (cPTSD) develops from repeated or prolonged trauma, childhood abuse, domestic violence, ongoing neglect. cPTSD often affects identity, relationships, and emotional regulation more broadly, and we're trained to support both.
-
Trauma healing isn't linear and varies widely. Some people experience significant relief in a focused 3-6 month period. Others with complex histories benefit from longer-term support. We check in regularly and are honest about your progress.
-
Sometimes sessions stir things up, and this can actually be part of processing. We always close sessions with grounding and check in on how you're leaving. You'll also have tools and support between sessions.
-
Yes, we offer EMDR. It can be extraordinarily effective for both single-event and complex trauma. We'll discuss whether it's a good fit for you in your first few sessions.
-
Absolutely. Adult healing from childhood trauma is very real and very possible. Many of our clients find that this work is the most transformative thing they've ever done for themselves.
