Depression

It's More Than Just Feeling Sad

Depression is waking up already tired. It's going through the motions while feeling completely disconnected from your own life. It's the numbness, the heaviness, the voice that says nothing will ever really change. And it is absolutely something you can get support for.

Does this sound familiar?

Persistent low mood or feeling empty inside

Loss of interest in things you used to love

Sleeping too much or not enough

Feeling like a burden to others

Difficulty making decisions or concentrating

Fatigue that sleep doesn't fix

"What's the point?" thinking

Withdrawing from people you care about

Depression doesn't always look like crying. Sometimes it looks like going through the motions with nothing left inside.

This Isn't a Personal Failing. It's a Real Experience.

Depression is one of the most misunderstood mental health experiences there is. People on the outside often can't see it. You might look completely fine — functional, even high-achieving — while feeling utterly hollow on the inside. That gap between how you appear and how you actually feel can make depression feel especially isolating.

"Depression isn't sadness. For many people, it's the absence of feeling — a grey fog that settles over everything."

Depression has biological, psychological, and social roots — it's rarely "just in your head" or something you can willpower your way out of. Life transitions, grief, chronic stress, trauma, hormonal shifts, and relationship difficulties can all play a role. Sometimes there's no single identifiable cause, and that's okay. You don't need to explain your depression to deserve help with it.

The important thing to know: depression responds really well to therapy. It often takes time and patience, but meaningful, lasting change is genuinely possible.

Understanding Depression

"But I have so much to be grateful for"

Gratitude and depression can exist at the same time. Your life circumstances don't need to justify how you feel. Depression doesn't follow logic.

It's not
laziness

When your brain is in a depressive state, simple tasks genuinely feel impossible. That's a neurological reality, not a character flaw.

High-functioning
depression is real

You can be meeting every deadline and still be deeply depressed. Performing well on the outside doesn't mean you're okay on the inside.

Things can genuinely change

Depression lies to you and tells you nothing will help. That's the depression talking. With the right support, real shifts happen.

How we help:

Support That Meets You Where You Are

We know that when you're feeling depressed, even reaching out feels hard. We make the process as gentle and accessible as possible.

Behavioural Activation

Depression makes you withdraw, which makes it worse. We work together to gradually re-engage with life in ways that feel manageable, not forced.

Cognitive Therapy

We gently examine the thought patterns depression creates , the self-blame, hopelessness, black-and-white thinking, and practice more balanced ways of seeing yourself and the world.

Exploring Root Causes

We look at what might be underneath the depression, grief, unprocessed experiences, relationship patterns, or life circumstances and address those layers too.

Self-Compassion Work

Depression often comes with brutal self-criticism. We practice treating yourself with the same kindness you'd offer a dear friend.

Reconnecting to Meaning

Through values-based approaches, we help you rediscover what matters to you and take small steps toward the life that reflects those values.

Safety Planning When Needed

If you're having thoughts of self-harm or suicide, we take this seriously and collaboratively create a safety plan. You will never be dismissed or judged here.

We Understand the Fog

We don't expect you to arrive motivated or hopeful. You can show up exactly as you are — exhausted, numb, uncertain — and that's more than enough.

What working with us looks like:

  • A 15-minute phone call to connect, ask questions, and make sure we're the right fit. No commitment, no pressure.

  • We talk about what's been happening, how long you've felt this way, your goals, and what you're hoping life could look like.

  • A tailored approach built around your specific needs and circumstances.

  • Small, consistent steps. Some sessions feel hard. Some feel like breakthroughs. All of it counts.

  • Not perfect but fuller. More connected. A life that starts to feel like yours again.

  • Sadness is a natural emotion tied to life events. Depression is a persistent state, often lasting weeks or months, that affects sleep, energy, motivation, and sense of self, often without a clear trigger. If you're unsure, that's exactly what an assessment conversation is for.

  • Not necessarily. Many people recover from depression through therapy alone. Others benefit from a combination of therapy and medication. We'll talk honestly about what might be most helpful for your specific situation, and we're happy to coordinate with your doctor if needed.

  • This is the catch-22 of depression, it makes you least able to seek help right when you need it most. We'll meet you wherever you are. Sessions can be shorter, lighter, more conversational. You don't have to "do" anything perfectly here.

  • We take this seriously and will never judge you for sharing these thoughts. If you're in immediate danger, please call 911, go to your nearest emergency facility, or text 988 (Canada's Suicide Crisis Helpline). If you're struggling with passive thoughts, this is absolutely something we address in counselling, safely and collaboratively.

  • Some people feel significantly better in 8–12 weeks with focused work. Others benefit from longer support. We check in regularly and adjust the plan as you grow.

  • Many extended health plans in Canada cover sessions with Registered Psychologists or Registered Social Social Workers. We recommend checking your plan to be sure.
