Internal Family Systems
Therapy
Have you ever felt like there are different parts of you pulling in different directions? Like one part wants to move forward and another is terrified? IFS works with exactly that, and it starts from a place of radical compassion: there are no bad parts of you.
At Evluni, we offer Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS) in Beacon Hill Calgary NW available for in person and virtual sessions
What is IFS Therapy?
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a therapy approach that views the mind not as one unified thing, but as a system of different "parts" each with their own history, fears, and intentions. You've probably already met some of yours, such as the relentless inner critic who never lets you rest, the people-pleaser who says yes when every part of you meant no, the part that goes numb when things get too hard.
IFS holds that these parts developed for a reason. They're not flaws or failures, they're adaptations. They learned to protect you from pain, often when you were very young and that was the only way to survive. The problem isn't that they exist. The problem is that they're still running old programs that no longer fit your life.
At the center of IFS is the concept of "Self" — a state of calm, curious, compassionate presence that every person has, no matter what they've been through. The goal of IFS therapy isn't to get rid of your parts. It's to help your Self come into relationship with them so that even the most frightened or protective parts can finally rest.
Trauma or complex PTSD
A relentless, critical inner voice
Anxiety that lives in the body
Depression and hopelessness
Deep shame or self-blame
Is IFS the right fit for you?
IFS is especially powerful for trauma, inner conflict, and anyone who feels like they're "at war with themselves." You might benefit from IFS if you experience:
Self-sabotage that makes no sense
Feeling fragmented or not quite yourself
Relationship patterns that keep repeating
Struggles with food or body image
Perfectionism that exhausts you
Every part of you got you this far. Every part of you deserves to heal.

Frequently asked questions
-
No, you don’t. This is one of the reasons many trauma survivors find IFS so healing. You don't have to tell the story of what happened over and over again. The work happens in relationship with your inner parts, at a pace that feels safe. Your sense of safety always drives the speed of the work.
-
EMDR uses bilateral stimulation to help the brain reprocess specific traumatic memories. IFS focuses on the inner relational system, the healing parts through compassionate inner dialogue and the process of unburdening. Both are powerful for trauma, and they can complement each other beautifully. Your therapist can talk through which approach, or which combination, might be the best fit for you.
-
IFS is about recognizing the normal way human minds work. We all have different inner experiences, moods, and voices depending on the situation. When you've felt torn about a decision or when part of you wanted one thing and another part wanted something else, that's what IFS works with. It's about understanding your inner world with curiosity and compassion.
