Understanding EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured, evidence-based therapy developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro. It's designed to help people heal from trauma and other distressing life experiences by harnessing the brain's natural ability to recover from painful events.

During EMDR, you'll recall a distressing memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation typically through guided eye movements by the therapist by tapping or using auditory tones. This dual-attention process mimics what happens during REM sleep, allowing the brain to reprocess "stuck" memories and integrate them in a healthier way.

The result? Traumatic memories become less vivid and distressing. They shift from feeling like they're happening right now to feeling like they happened in the past which is where they belong.

  • PTSD or complex trauma (C-PTSD)

  • Childhood abuse or neglect

  • Sexual trauma

  • Accident or injury trauma

  • Grief and complicated loss

  • Anxiety and panic disorders

Is EMDR Right for You?

EMDR is best known for trauma and PTSD, but research shows it's effective for much more:

  • Phobias

  • Attachment wounds

  • Depression rooted in past experiences

  • Performance anxiety

  • Disturbing memories that intrude

  • Negative beliefs about yourself

Healing from trauma is possible. You don't have to carry it forever.
