EMDR

Eye Movement
Desensitization & Reprocessing

A powerful, evidence-based approach for healing trauma. EMDR helps your brain do what it was naturally designed to do, to process and integrate difficult experiences so they no longer hold you hostage.

If you've ever felt like a past experience just won't stay in the past, noticing that it keeps showing up in your body, your reactions, or your sleep, EMDR was designed for exactly that. It's one of the most powerful trauma therapies available, and it works differently than you might expect.

At Evluni, we offer Trauma-Focused Therapy In Beacon Hill, Calgary NW, available for in person and virtual sessions

What is EMDR?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, which sounds complicated, but the idea behind it is actually quite natural. When something traumatic happens to us, the brain sometimes doesn't process it the way it does ordinary memories. Instead, it gets stuck and frozen in time, full of the same fear, shame, or overwhelm as the moment it happened.

EMDR helps the brain do what it was always meant to do: process and integrate those experiences so they can move from "it's happening right now" to "that happened to me, and I survived it."

During EMDR, you'll hold a difficult memory in mind while your therapist guides you through bilateral stimulation using gentle eye movements, tapping, or sounds. This dual-focus process is similar to what naturally happens during REM sleep, and it helps the brain reprocess memories that have been stuck for years, sometimes even decades.

You don't need to talk about the trauma in detail. You don't need to explain it or analyze it. The healing happens at a deeper level than words.

  • PTSD or complex trauma (C-PTSD)

  • Childhood abuse or neglect

  • Sexual trauma

  • Accident or injury trauma

  • Grief and complicated loss

  • Anxiety and panic disorders

Is EMDR Right for You?

EMDR is most well-known for trauma and PTSD, but it's effective for much more than that. You might benefit from EMDR if you're carrying:

  • Phobias

  • Attachment wounds

  • Depression rooted in past experiences

  • Performance anxiety

  • Intrusive memories or flashbacks

  • Negative beliefs about yourself

You don't have to keep carrying this. Healing is genuinely possible.

Frequently asked questions

  • No, and for many people, this is the most relieving thing about EMDR. Unlike traditional talk therapy, you don't need to narrate or explain your trauma. You hold it internally while the processing happens. Many clients say that for the first time, they don't feel re-traumatized by telling their story, because they don't have to.

  • It's normal for emotions to arise during processing, that's part of how it works. But your therapist will never push you into material you're not ready for, and your therapist will identify tools that works for you to pause or ground yourself. Your sense of safety guides the pace of the work entirely.

  • Yes, it can! EMDR can be delivered effectively online. Many clients actually appreciate the added sense of control that comes from being in their own space during sessions. We offer both in-person and virtual EMDR at Evluni.
